Speed wins the sale — and it also wins the relationship. The research on customer experience is consistent: people increasingly expect instant, accurate help, and they quietly leave when they don't get it.
Customers expect instant, and punish slow
Zendesk's 2025 CX Trends research found that 85 percent of CX leaders say customers will abandon a brand that can't resolve an issue on first contact, while 86 percent of consumers say responsiveness and accuracy directly shape what they buy. Three-quarters of leaders expect the majority of interactions to be handled without a human before long — and 64 percent of consumers say they are more likely to trust an AI agent that feels friendly and genuinely helpful.
The speed–satisfaction curve
Satisfaction doesn't decline gently as wait times grow — it drops off a cliff. The first minutes are decisive: a reply that arrives while the customer is still thinking about you feels like great service; the same reply an hour later feels like an afterthought. An AI agent that responds the instant someone reaches out keeps every interaction in that high-satisfaction zone.
AI lifts sentiment and steadies the team
The benefit runs in both directions. In the NBER Generative AI at Work study, the same assistant that made agents more productive also improved customer sentiment and increased employee retention — calmer customers and a calmer team at once. When the routine, repetitive contacts are handled instantly, your people are freed for the conversations that genuinely need a human.
